Competency & Readiness
/ Overview
The driller’s role brings technical knowledge, procedural discipline, and team leadership together at the console. Knowing a procedure is one part of the picture; explaining a decision, recognising a gap in understanding, and communicating clearly are also important indicators of readiness.
Azimuth’s Driller’s Assessment is a structured, performance-based evaluation covering five connected areas of the role. Its purpose is to develop a clearer understanding of a participant’s competency and identify where further attention or training may be useful.
The assessment provides a focused starting point for development discussions, grounded in the demands of drilling operations.
/ Who it’s for
This assessment is intended for drillers and organisations seeking a more structured view of performance at the console. It can support conversations between participants, supervisors, and training teams about the capabilities required for the role.
For drillers: an opportunity to examine how technical understanding, procedural knowledge, communication, and leadership fit together in their work.
For drilling teams: a way to focus development discussions on specific competency areas, rather than relying only on general impressions.
For training decision-makers: a starting point for considering where corrective sessions or further development may be most useful. Suitability for a particular role or operational requirement should be discussed with Azimuth before booking.
/ Assessment areas
01 / Operational competency
How a participant connects technical knowledge with the responsibilities of the driller’s role. The focus is on understanding the work, explaining the reasoning behind decisions, and recognising the limits of one’s own knowledge.
02 / Well control readiness
Understanding of core well control principles and preparedness to apply that knowledge in the operational context. This area helps focus discussion on readiness and on concepts that may need reinforcement.
03 / Procedural adherence
Understanding and consistent application of relevant operating procedures. Attention is given to procedural clarity: knowing what is expected, recognising uncertainty, and understanding why a procedure matters.
04 / Communication effectiveness
Clarity of communication with the drilling team, including how information, instructions, and concerns are expressed and understood. Effective communication supports a shared understanding of the situation and the work ahead.
05 / Leadership at the console
How the driller provides direction, coordinates with others, and approaches decisions under pressure. This area connects individual competency with the wider responsibilities of leading a drilling team.
/ The purpose
The aim is to make development needs easier to discuss and prioritise. A participant may be confident in one area while needing reinforcement in another; looking at the five areas together provides a broader basis for that conversation.
The assessment is intended to help your team:
- Recognise strengths that can be built upon.
- Identify knowledge or procedural areas that need further attention.
- Consider how communication and leadership affect performance.
- Prioritise relevant follow-up training.
/ Planning & preparation
Start by sharing the purpose of the assessment, the roles involved, and the number of participants. Let us know which competency areas are most important to your operation and whether you have specific procedures or development concerns you want considered.
Useful information for the initial discussion includes:
- The participant’s role and relevant drilling experience.
- Your operational setting and the responsibilities being assessed.
- The key procedures or competency expectations you want to discuss.
- Known training needs or recurring areas of uncertainty.
- Your preferred timing and any delivery constraints.
